The adoption process and information

April 2024
Thank you for considering an adoption via Griffon Rescue.
Set out below is the process we follow for each of our adoptions.
After you have informed us that you want to adopt a dog we will, if requested, send you a pre-adoption questionnaire. Please fill in this form, without further obligation and return it by email to: rescuegriffon.uk@gmail.com
Keep in mind that there can be multiple requests for one dog, so if you are sure that the dog in question is indeed THE dog you want to adopt, let us know asap. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that you will ultimately be the one who adopts the dog.
Applicable to all adoptions is that you must have a back-up to support your dog in the event that you cannot do this yourself. This back-up can be a relative, a neighbour, a friend or even your vet, but at least one person who guarantees to take care for your adopted dog in the first place, in you can’t anymore. This is to prevent your dog ending up in a kennel or being PTS should you not be able to care for them. If your back-up is unable to keep your adopted dog, they can contact us and we will, in consultation with you, look for a foster or another home for your dog. Being first back-up is a serious matter, so we strongly advise you to talk over your intention to adopt a dog with your chosen person and let them read this information and the Adopter’s Advice we will send you prior to your dog arriving with you. Your back-up also has to sign the Adoption Questionnaire and Adoption Contract that you must complete should you wish to go ahead with an adoption.
Adoptions can be subject to a standard home-check. If required, a home-check is carried out once a dog is reserved for adoption, by a person not necessarily associated with our Rescue, and who lives within a close distance to the adopter’s address. The visit is informal as we have no rules for adopters, only that the proposed home is suitable for the dog. The Griffon Rescue UK Team will arrange to do an interview with you via Skype, WhatsApp or Messenger. Following the home visit or interview, the Team will decide whether to proceed with the adoption and inform you of their decision.
Then we will forward an adoption agreement to you by email which you must sign and return. This is a legal agreement, and we request that you read it extremely carefully and ensure you are able to comply with its terms prior to signing.
After this, the adoption donation must be transferred to the Griffon Rescue account before we can proceed with preparing your dog for transportation to you. Your adoption donation covers the veterinarian costs for preparing the dog for adoption according to our requirements, vaccinations, transport, etc. Once the donation is paid, we will initiate the adoption preparation procedure. Please be aware, if you decide to cancel the adoption or return the dog following adoption, your donation is non-refundable.
As the adoption progresses, we will keep in contact with you and of course you can ask us questions at any time. We invite all our adopters to join our Facebook group - ‘The Happy Griffons’ - where pictures and stories about our adopted dogs are shared, and where you can ask questions and learn more about the breed and their needs.
Finally, we must take your age into account when you apply for a dog. Unfortunately, we cannot rehome a dog younger than 5 years old with persons older than 75, unless you have a much younger back-up.

You should have received information about the dog you have applied for in our publication. We give as much information as possible, which sadly, often is very little. Many of our dogs have been in the shelter for some time, others may have been born there or entered as a puppy, some given up, others simply found wandering the streets. All the dogs we rescue have been assessed for temperament and behaviour prior to being made available for adoption, but it is good to remain aware that these can change once in a home environment. Some can be very timid/fearful at first and may need time to adjust or grow in confidence.
We find it is often better to treat your dog as you would a new puppy, start as you mean to go on and put your required boundaries in place from the first day. It can be very easy to feel sorry for your new dog and
overcompensate. It's important to remember they are now in a loving, warm and caring home, with everything they need.
Please give the dog the time it needs and don't give up too quickly if things don't go exactly as you hoped.

TRANSPORT TO THE UK
Since January 2021, all dogs travel to the UK on EU registered transport and are prepared to enter the UK using the new post-BREXIT UK APHA Import System (TRACES), which includes a mandatory import document and taxes.
Between your decision to adopt the dog and their subsequent arrival at your home, a period of time is needed to prepare the dog in its country of origin to meet Griffon Rescue specific adoption requirements and we also need to take into account transport availability. Additionally, 21 days must elapse between the date the rabies vaccination is given and the date of travel. We will keep you informed as much as possible of timescales.
The dogs travel via land to their new home which takes between 36 and 48 hours typically, but longer for areas further north in the UK. Please be aware that if you live north of Manchester, in Scotland, Inner London or areas such as Cornwall or Wales, a specific quote for transport will be needed. We will give you an estimate of the costs once you’re happy to proceed with the adoption.
The delivery of the dog will take place to a location as near as possible for the transporter to the location where you live.

COSTS
Your donation covers:
A. Our costs in preparing your dog for adoption include:
1. Microchip and passport;
2. Full vaccinations, including rabies and kennel cough;
3. Blood tests on 4 or 5 Mediterranean diseases and Brucellosis; 4. Anti-parasite treatment against fleas and ticks, and deworming;
5. A safety harness.
6. Physical examination prior to transport;
7. Neutering, except if the dog is a puppy or too young. For puppies or dogs which are too young to neuter we require a £100.00 deposit which will be refunded after neutering and presentation of a copy of the bill from the veterinary practice who undertake the treatment. The neutering itself is your responsibility.
All the dogs we currently have available are already neutered.

B. Transport costs from the country of origin to the country of destination or within the UK.

C. Mandatory import documents & Health Certificate.

Costs Breakdown
Once your home check is approved you pay:

£310  Adoption fee: this is for chip, vaccinations, passport, neutering, and health tests.

£300  Transport fee to southern England. It is more to Scotland and may be more for other parts of England and Wales (please ask for a quote)

£25    Safety harness

£80    Import documents and Health Certificate fees

We regret that we have had to increase adoption costs as well as the transport costs. Due to BREXIT, more documents are now required, and the costs for transport and customs paperwork have risen. Import taxes are also now applicable for dogs coming to the UK. The costs of the toll on M-ways in Spain and France, and the cost of fuel have also gone up.

• during the procedure we will keep you informed as much as possible;

As a completely volunteer-managed rescue, every penny we raise is spent on the dogs in our care. We’d be so grateful if you would consider joining our Guardians of the Griffons Club. For only £2 per month – that’s less than the cost of a Starbucks coffee - you can help us pay for foster homes and at times, extra medical care for our rescue Griffons before adoption.
